About this course

European workers are ageing. By 2030, workers aged over 55 are expected to make up 30% or more of the total workforce in many EU countries. This creates challenges for employees, employers and businesses. This course is designed to illustrate some of the issues, to promote discussion and to lead to healthier and more productive workplaces as they address the challenges of an ageing workforce.

Course features

  • The course is structured in four modules. Each module consists of one or more sessions. Sessions are divided in units.
  • Course documentation is mainly in English (Video transcripts are available in English and Spanish but audio recordings are in Spanish).

What will I learn

After the course, you will be able to:
  • Know the concept and areas of application of ergonomics.
  • Be aware of which are the main ergonomics risks at the workplaces and which are their consequences.
  • Identify the main changes in functional capacity of aged people, and how it can affect to the performance at the workplace.
  • Know the relation between age and musculoskeletal disorders.
  • Assess work environments following ergonomics principles.
  • Consider the workers capabilities and the work demands to assign tasks to older workers.
  • Know the ergonomic criteria in the design of workplaces and work environments.
  • Consider the age factor in the design and adaptation of workplaces.

Course Goals

The aim of this course is to provide ergonomic tools, recommendations and design criteria with the aim of improving health, comfort and efficiency of aged workers. The course will also give professionals the necessary knowledge to assess workplaces taking into account the older workers, and the criteria to design or to propose improvements at workplaces. All this information is articulated from the perspective of ergonomics, with the aim of adjusting products and environments to the capabilities of aged people.

The specific objectives of the course are the following:
  • To know the areas of application of ergonomics.
  • To define the concept of active ageing.
  • To study the basic ergonomic criteria to consider in design of workplaces.
  • To study the impact of ageing on the balance between physical workload and physical capacity of workers.
  • To know the most important changes in functional capacity of aged people and how it can affect to the performance at workplace, when the Ergonomics criteria are applied in the design of the workplaces.

Teachers

Mr. Alberto Ferreras

Degree in Industrial Psychology. Degree in Social Work. Job Risk Prevention Technician (Ergonomics and Psychosociology specialist). He develops his job since 1993 at the Institute of Biomechanics of Valencia (IBV) as a Senior Researcher. He has participated and conducted R+D projects in several national and European calls (AAL, Leonardo da Vinci, CIP-ICT, Erasmus+, Avanza, etc.). He has published several articles and books in national and international publications. His current functions are related to the development of projects, assessment and training about ergonomics, adaptation of workplaces for disabled people, evaluation of job risks and design of furniture, ICT products and other equipment for people with special needs.

Mrs Rakel Poveda

Master in Social Welfare. Degree in Social Work and Social Gerontology (Universitat de València). She works since 1993, as Senior Reasearcher, at the Institute of Biomechanics of Valencia (IBV). Since 2014, She is assistant Professor at the Social Work Department of the Universitat de València. She has participated and conducted R+D projects in several national and European calls (AAL, CIP-ICT, Avanza, Plan Nacional). She has published several articles and books in national and international publications. She works in the area of ageing and people with disabilities with especial focus on: characterization of the assistive technologies users and their problematic, as well as the development of methodologies for user-friendly design and accessibility.

Mr Pierre Gillois

MD, MPH, PhD. Université Grenoble Alpes - Univ Joseph Fourrier. Grenoble Alpes University Hospital. Expert in Human-computer Interaction, Data Mining and Medical Technology.
